This is a controversial, yet effective way to bring attention to a grave health epidemic. Signs reading “Hipsters Deserve to Die” and “Crazy Old Aunts Deserve to Die” among others have been popping up in U.S. cities including New York, Chicago, Seattle and New Orleans. The signs lead to the website NoOneDeservesToDie.org where it appears that the “killer” here is actually lung cancer, which takes the lives of 160,000 people a year in the United States. Backed by the Lung Cancer Alliance, the point of the posters is to encourage people to look past the stigma of lung cancer, as the disease does not discriminate whom it affects. Many have praised the marketing ploy for being provocative yet successful in bringing awareness to this issue, as media outlets nation wide have reported upon it. Others find it offensive to the specific groups on the posters. What do you think?
